Once you have all the necessities for your cat, you should double-check that there are no unsafe elements in your home for a curious cat. Then bring the cat back.
Safety matters to be aware of at home
- Before the new cat comes home, move dangerous items out of the cat’s reach.
- Don’t let the cat touch the grate. Or install a guardrail around the stove.
- Keep the doors of the washing machine, refrigerator, freezer, oven and microwave closed at all times.
- Keep valuable and breakable ornaments out of the reach of cats.
- Never grow poisonous plants indoors or in other areas where cats are active. Some plants are poisonous to cats.
- Keep garbage and waste out of the reach of cats.
- Power cords Do not allow cats to chew on cords; turn off the power when not in use.
- Fireplace guards Install guards around the fireplace or other open fires.
- Other tips: Do not leave sharp instruments outside;
- Don’t leave poisonous items in the house where cats can get to them;
- Do not leave plastic bags outside: if the cat gets into them, it may suffocate;
- Do not allow cats to walk on the stovetop, especially the grate; keep cats away when you are cooking soup or frying food in oil;
- Don’t put a hot iron where the cat can touch it;
- Do not leave small items lying around so that cats may swallow them or step on them;
- Do not allow cats to climb onto high balconies – if the balcony is not wrapped;
- Please take care to keep the screens in each room closed at all times;
Bringing the cat home
Put the cat in an appropriate pet-specific crate (e.g., pet airline crate.). If you use a wire cage for the cat it is best to put a cloth cover on the outside of the cage.) It is important to bring the cat home without a cardboard box.
If you are bringing an adult cat from a friend’s home, it is a good idea to ask for an item that the cat is familiar with. For example, if the cat is used to using a litter box or toys, it will feel safer and settle down in the new place more quickly.
After arriving home, let the new cat familiarize itself with the new environment and do not allow it to be pestered by other pets. It is best not to allow children to tease the new cat or kitten. This is especially important if the children have never had a pet before.
