The St. Bernard, originally from Switzerland, is an oversized dog. It is famous for its role as a rescue dog at St. Bernard Church in the Alps. This dog is exceptionally large, with males standing over 70cm tall and weighing 64-91 kilograms.
The tail is broad and powerful with a slightly curved tip. The ears are claimed to be triangular and the dark brown eyes are positioned more forward and friendly. The loose portion of the upper lip is slightly drooping and the inner and outer fur is dense.
Its ancestor is thought to be the Tibetan Mastiff, which was brought to Europe via Italy in the early AD. Rescuing avalanche victims began in 1707, and in the early 19th century, when St. Bernard dogs rescued more than 40 victims of the Paris I disaster in France.
Although large in size, the St. Bernard has a very gentle character, easy to get close to, and is particularly tolerant of children, making it the best pet of choice if you have the right family environment.
