Have the dog learn to turn its eyes to you as soon as you call its name. When training, use things that are of more interest to the dog (toys, candy, etc.) to get the dog’s attention.
This is a very important training. It ensures that in future training, no matter what the situation is at any given time, you will be able to focus the dog’s attention on the owner when you call his name.
Start by calling the dog’s name while holding a favorite object and slowly moving it back and forth between the dog’s eyes and the owner’s jaws. Then, on one of several occasions, give the dog its favorite object.
Make the dog feel very happy to be called by its name. Note that when the dog’s name is called, even if once in a while the dog looks up at the owner’s face with the call, give him great encouragement by stroking his head, sometimes giving a prize, etc.
In order to make the time of watching grow gradually, the time of giving rewards should also be gradually extended accordingly.
Call the dog’s name without bending down. Just hold something that the dog likes and move it back and forth between the dog’s eyes and the owner’s chin to attract the dog’s attention and make it focus its eyes on the owner’s face.
