Shih Tzu: An Overview

The Shih Tzu is a robust, lively, and alert toy breed dog, with a dual-layer, smooth, and long coat. Originating from imperial Chinese ancestors, it holds an aristocratic legacy as a cherished palace pet. Proudly poised, the Shih Tzu always holds its head high with a tail that curls over its back. While they may vary in size, it’s essential for them to remain compact, solid, and have a proportionate weight and bone structure.

History

Legend has it that in the mid-17th century, the Shih Tzu emerged from a cross between the Lhasa lion dog, a gift from the Dalai Lama to the emperor, and the Pekingese. It wasn’t until 1908, after the passing of Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing dynasty, that this breed was secretly introduced to Europe.

Known for their intelligence and docility, Shih Tzus were rumored to have been bred by eunuchs vying to produce the most delightful companion for the emperor. The Shih Tzu Club was established in England in 1935, and from there, the breed made its way to Scandinavia, other parts of Europe, and Australia. U.S. servicemen stationed in England during World War II introduced them to America, with the American Kennel Club registering the breed in 1969.

Friendly and sociable, Shih Tzus are perfect for urban or rural living, with a strong bond and tolerance for both humans and other animals. However, their luscious coat requires daily grooming, especially during feeding times.

With proper care, they can live for over 15 years.

Physical Traits

  • Size: Ideally standing at 9 to 10 1/2 inches at the shoulder, they shouldn’t be below 8 inches or above 11 inches. Adult dogs ideally weigh between 9 to 16 pounds. The body length slightly exceeds the height, presenting a compact and solid build.
  • Head: Their head is round, broad, proportionate to their body, with a clear demarcation between the skull and muzzle. Eager, affectionate eyes are ideally very dark, with certain exceptions based on coat color.
  • Body: One of the hallmarks of a Shih Tzu is its overall balance without exaggerated features. They possess a broad, deep chest, ensuring optimal lung capacity.
  • Coat: Shih Tzus boast a magnificent, dual-layered coat that’s thick, long, and generally straight, with only slight waves allowed. Their coat may be of any color, with no preference given to any particular hue.
  • Gait: Their movement is direct, fluid, and effortless, with a pronounced forward reach and strong rear drive.
  • Temperament: As companion dogs, Shih Tzus are generally cheerful, affectionate, friendly, and trustful.
